May is Mental Wellness Month

May 22, 20254 min read

Mental health is never a joke. It’s something we all need to be concerned about because it can affect any of us at any time. But let’s be real — mental health and mental wellness are not exactly the same thing..

I’m no doctor, so I’m not here to diagnose or pretend I have all the answers. But I do know this: mental health challenges have touched my family personally. My father and brother have both struggled with mental health disorders.

And yet, even if you’re not facing something clinical, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t care deeply about your mental wellbeing — the daily, intentional care of your emotional, psychological, and spiritual health.

Let’s talk about this a little more.

This is the month where we get to truly focus on how we are taking care of ourselves — our mental and emotional health, our psychological wellbeing, our inner balance, and yes, our self-care.

Ask yourself:

  • What grounding techniques have I incorporated into my daily routine?

  • Am I practicing any wellness rituals to reset my mind and emotions?

  • Have I been mindful about my "thought detoxes" or mindset resets?.

These little daily actions matter more than you think.
They shape your mood. They shape your energy. They protect your vitality.
Growing up, I heard it all the time: Stress will kill you.
And as I get older, it’s never been more clear—your mind is something precious that you have to protect on purpose.
So this month, maybe it’s time to shut down the laptop earlier, turn off the news, and turn inward.
Focus on your spiritual wellness, your wholeness, and your vitality — because no one else can do that for you. Female-Founded Wellness Brands Changing the Game

Things You Can Start This Month for Your Mental Wellness:
If you’re not sure where to start, here’s a simple list you can begin incorporating today
:

  • Take a 10-minute mindfulness walk without your phone

  • Turn off screens 90 minutes before bed

  • Journal three things you're grateful for every night

  • Try a "thought detox" by unfollowing toxic social media accounts

  • Schedule one "do nothing" hour per week — guilt free

  • Sip a calming herbal tea before bed (like chamomile or lavender)

  • Try magnesium supplements to improve sleep and reduce anxiety

  • Book a therapy or coaching session (even if you feel "fine")

  • Play a calming playlist while you work instead of the news

  • Light a candle and meditate for just 5 minutes a day

You don’t have to overhaul your whole life — but small changes compound into big results.

Female-Founded Mental Wellness Brands Worth Checking Out:
I’ve only personally used a couple of these, but if you’re looking to explore more ways to support your mental wellness and support women entrepreneurs, here’s a great list to start with:

1. Calm (co-founder: Tamara Levitt, Chief Mindfulness Officer)
→ One of the leading mindfulness and meditation apps helping millions manage stress, sleep better, and develop daily mindfulness habits. (I've downloaded Calm before — it's simple but powerful when you need to quiet the noise.)

2. Therapy for Black Girls (founder: Dr. Joy Harden Bradford)
→ A beautiful platform and podcast making mental health topics more accessible for Black women and girls. (I found this before COVID and thought it was incredible. If you haven't checked it out yet, it's worth your time.)

3. The Honey Pot Company (founder: Bea Dixon)
→ Primarily a feminine wellness brand, but Bea often highlights the emotional and mental health connections tied to body care and self-love. (An amazing woman-owned brand I've been aware of for a while, even if I haven’t personally tried the products.)

4. Real (founder: Ariela Safira)
→ A mental health platform offering accessible therapy and coaching through memberships.

5. LOOM (founder: Erica Chidi)
→ A modern guide to sexual and reproductive wellness, but also deeply connected to emotional and mental wellbeing through education and empowerment.

6. The Nap Ministry (founder: Tricia Hersey)
→ A revolutionary brand promoting rest as a form of resistance and healing, especially for those experiencing racial and generational trauma.

7. MyWellbeing (founder: Alyssa Petersel)
